CLEANING

The correct digitalization of an audio recording, depends mostly on its previous condition.

Most of the audio recordings especially grooved media, need cleaning before the digitalization.
The inadequate use of liquids or cleaning systems can do not only irreparable damage of the audio support that we try to digitilize, but damages the player machines and even the health of the person who manipulates it.

Most of the noises on a recording are removed with appropriate cleaning.

In our team we rely on a chemical specialist in the manipulation of all kinds of products and their application to the audio supports. Automated cleaning machines, ultrasound devices, chemical ovens, digital microscopes and other laboratory materials are used for proper cleaning.

We analyse the support before beginning work on it.
Open reel tape recorder contaminated by fungi. It needs specialist cleaning and treatment before digitalization. It is possible to contaminate other reels and damage our health otherwise.
cilindro fungos
Brown wax cylinder contaminated by fungi. This can contaminate other cylinders and cylinder players.

Before cleaning the audio recording support we must verify the composition to use the appropriate chemical products.

On this shellac 78rpm, we can estimate the dirt lodged in the grooves. Before playing, it is necessary to clean it appropriately (the products used are never generic for all the discs of 78rpm, because the Edison doesn't need the same chemical solutions that the shellac, or the gelatine discs need, for example.)
Cleaning machines like the KM, are especially effective on vinyl discs or shellac dics, however you can't use it on cellulose nitrate discs.
